I am so fortunate to have found that one thing in life that I was meant to do. I may not be rich in the monetary sense of the word, but spiritually and creatively I couldn’t ask for more. Gear envy aside I have so much more than I ever dared dream. I send my gratitude out to the world and will take a break from creating to get my screen recording skills in line so I can start sharing my knowledge via online tutorials in my posts. Coming soon I promise! I am also working on a syllabus for a one day workshop in the spring. I will announce more as we get closer. Until then a little outline of my work flow for today’s image. One of the main goals of any artist is to create beautiful images, but for most of us the aesthetics are secondary to the message. And while much of my work focuses on the connection between humanity and the natural world in a more whimsical and fantastical style I also feel drawn to speak out for those who for one reason or another choose not to speak out for themselves, those images tend to the dark and emotive side. So here is to those who suffer in silence. Continue Reading
This image is one that I have been thinking about capturing for some time. I have always been fascinated by stories. I guess that is what drew me to decide to major in English in college rather than art. There are so many stories that have touched me throughout my life, but I think as with many, it is the fairy tales of my youth that bring the most vivid memories. Especially the dark ones. I think that fairy tales are our first indication in life, that not everything in the world is warm and fuzzy. Continue Reading
I guess there really wasn’t any need to label the above shots before and after… Most people are quite confident that foliage, even the fall variety does not come in pink. None the less, there you have it. A side by side comparison using the color replacement tool in Photoshop. Tons of fun, and while we know that trees are generally not pink, the effect is pretty convincing when done well. Without too much work Photoshop is able to replicate the tonal variations and do a huge chunk of the work for you. The trickiest part is making sure you select the whole range. I actually missed a bit first time round… Continue Reading
Today I am finally throwing in my two cents regarding facebook’s newest change of terms. I respect that they give us a very awesome free service. We can use facebook in so many ways that enhance our lives both on the personal and professional level, but I would rather pay them to use the service than to know that I no longer have any rights to the things that I share. I love the work that I do and I am excited about sharing it because I hope that there are people out there whose lives might be made just a little bit brighter when they see my images. My images are representations of how I see the world and are a direct reflection of who I am as an individual. I want them seen and shared in a manner that holds true to that intent. Continue Reading
Even though I have more to do than hours in a day today I wanted to post a quick blog before I disappear into the great white north. Connectivity is a once a day deal up there and I most likely will not be posting anything until I crawl back down under the bridge (a Michiganism for those of you from elsewhere). Continue Reading
Today finds me very excited about the future. I love it when I schedule a new shoot that has been cooking in my head. The hands on building of the vision is becoming a large portion of the creative rush for me. I finished gathering the props yesterday, and I have drawn out a basic outline of location today. I also set up a model and scheduled the shoot for tomorrow. YAY! Continue Reading
I seriously considered not writing today, I just feel beat lately. I am so in need of the long weekend up north that is right around the corner! Continue Reading
I have been reading a lot lately about seeking inspiration and organizing your ideas before the shoot. This post is not to debunk the importance in that, but there is also something to be said about leaving room for the idea to develop on location. Flexibility is a huge part of my arsenal. Especially when scheduling models. I have more often than you can imagine set up a model for a stormy moody shot only to wake up to beautiful blue skies and vice versa… Continue Reading
